What is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)?
An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is the highest qualified professional in breastfeeding support. Achieving this credential requires years of study, hands-on experience, and passing a rigorous four-hour degree-level exam.
IBCLCs are trained to provide expert guidance for all kinds of breastfeeding situations, from everyday questions to more complex challenges. To qualify, an IBCLC must:
Be a healthcare professional or complete education in 14 health science subjects.
Complete at least 90 hours of specialised lactation education.
Gain a minimum of 1,000 hours of clinical experience supporting breastfeeding families.
The IBCLC is the only internationally recognised breastfeeding qualification, awarded and regulated by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE). To ensure families always receive the most up-to-date care, IBCLCs must recertify every five years and follow a strict professional code of conduct.
You can be confident that when you see an IBCLC, you are working with someone who is highly trained, internationally accredited, and committed to supporting you and your baby.
All certified IBCLCs are registered with the IBLCE, and you can find them listed at www.iblce.org.
